Egypt secures new investment from Chevron to unlock Mediterranean gas reserves with 3D seismic data and two new wells.
Egypt is setting the stage to explore its Mediterranean energy potential further through a multimillion-dollar commitment from U.S.-headquartered energy giant Chevron, which will spearhead deepwater drilling and seismic data reprocessing in the offshore Lotus Area, marking a fresh push to unlock new domestic oil and gas reserves.
Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has expanded its footprint in the Mediterranean under a newly signed agreement between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and Chevron, witnessed by Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
As a result, the U.S. energy major will inject a minimum of $88 million into the offshore Lotus Area in the Mediterranean Sea. The agreement encompasses the drilling of two exploratory wells and the reprocessing of 3D seismic data, as part of the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ efforts to expand exploration activities and unlock new areas for petroleum investments.
Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources praised the partnership with Chevron, asserting that the signing of the Lotus agreement reflects the company’s continued commitment to pumping new investments into exploration activities in the country.
Badawi expressed his aspiration for positive results from the drilling activities in the area, contributing to the discovery of new resources and supporting domestic production of natural gas and crude oil.
This deal comes over two months after Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources disclosed its intention to speed up field development in the Eastern Mediterranean waters to enable upstream growth.
