German shipowner Elbdeich Reederei recently placed an order for two container vessel newbuildings.
The pair represents a new size for the family-run company’s orderbook, which now comprises eight vessels in three different sizes.
The TEU capacities of the new ships have not been disclosed, and no charterer has been identified for the vessels.
The order extends a fleet growth programme that Elbdeich has pursued through successive contracts in different size categories since 2023.
In early 2025, the company ordered two 1,900TEU feeder ships from Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in China, later exercising options for two additional units in March of that year. The four vessels are due for delivery from the fourth quarter of 2026 and through 2027.
Elbdeich followed this in August 2025 with an order for two 5,100TEU widebeam ships from an undisclosed Asian yard, with delivery scheduled for 2027. The ships will comply with IMO Tier III NOx emission standards and will be fitted with fuel-saving devices.
The shipowner said its fleet strategy combines orders for energy-efficient newbuildings from Asian shipyards with the purchase and sale of second-hand tonnage.
The company listed dual-fuel propulsion and high ice class among the features it considers for its vessels.
