A protective coating fails at the steel underneath it, not in the tin.

Corrosion protection on vessels, storage tanks, pipe racks and offshore structures is specified as a system: a surface cleanliness grade, a profile range, a number of coats, and a dry film thickness, each verified before the next stage covers it up. Most premature failures trace back to a preparation stage that was signed off without being measured, not to the material that went on top of it. We supply the abrasive, the coating and the applicators as one scope, so the surface, the specification and the record of what was applied all stay with one contractor.

Why protective coating systems fail early, and what the standards actually require

Surface preparation decides how long the system lasts, not the product
ISO 8501-1 sets the cleanliness grades, and the surface profile has to land inside the range the coating manufacturer specifies. Soluble salt contamination survives blasting and keeps pulling moisture through the film long after it has cured. A coating applied over a surface nobody measured is an unwarranted coating, whatever the tin says.

Corrosivity category belongs to the asset, not to the site
ISO 12944 classifies atmospheric environments from C1 to CX and handles immersion separately as Im1 to Im4. On one facility, a jetty deck, a splash zone member and a tank interior can sit in three different categories. Writing a single system across a whole site is the most reliable way to lose the worst-exposed member first.

Dry film thickness is measured to a rule, not judged by eye
ISO 19840 sets how many readings to take across an area and how to assess them, including the convention that individual readings may fall to 80 per cent of the nominal thickness while the mean still has to meet it. Too much coating is a defect as well: excess thickness on an epoxy leads to cracking and disbonding.

On a live plant, coating is a permit problem before it is a paint problem
Blasting and spray application inside an operating facility bring hot work adjacency, confined space entry, overspray containment, waste abrasive handling, and simultaneous operations with other trades. Access and permits usually set the programme, not the drying times.

What to settle before a coating contract starts

A specification should name a standard for every stage of the work: the cleanliness grade, the profile range, the number of coats, the nominal and minimum dry film thickness, and the points at which the job stops for inspection. A specification that names only the product leaves every later argument unresolved, because there is nothing to measure the work against.

Hold points matter more than the final inspection. Once the top coat is on, nothing underneath it can be verified without destroying the film. Agree in advance which stages stop for inspection, who signs them off, and what happens when a stage fails. This is the single cheapest thing a client can insist on, and the one most often left out.

Conditions at the moment of application govern whether work can proceed at all. Relative humidity, dew point and steel temperature are recorded at each coat for a reason: those records are what settle a warranty claim two years later, when the coating has blistered and nobody can remember what the weather was doing.
